MBABANE – Malawi-born gaffer Kinnah Phiri has completed his switch to Mbabane Swallows.

As exclusively revealed by this publication on Tuesday, the seasoned coach has been roped in by the Champions League envoys to assist in the CAF campaign.  He was unveiled by Swallows officials, led by General Manager Sandile Zwane last night during a press briefing at Lugogo Sun in Ezulwini.

Phiri, who is the only Malawian coach to have steered his country’s national football team to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), said he was a long-time friend of slain Swallows Chairman Victor Gamedze and wanted Swallows to win in honour of the deceased.

“I have the experience.

“The Swallows coach ‘Koki’ is also a long-time friend and he cannot resent me.  Swaziland (Eswatini) is my second home,” said the former Manzini Wanderers player.
Phiri has also coached South Africa’s Free State Stars. He expressed hope that his stint as Tanzania’s Mbeya FC coach between 2016 and 2017, would come in handy. “There is no pressure, but I’m not here as a messiah.

“The support and motivation will make us win,” he said. When introducing the coach, Zwane, who was joined by PRO Jackson Dlamini and Legal Officer Welile Mabuza, clarified that Phiri, who has been offered a job as a Director of Football back home, was not here as a new coach but was coming on board as a consultant, as he was currently free, but would be in charge in the games against Tanzania’s Simba SC, following the suspension of Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati by CAF.  The latter was suspended for the first four matches of the CAF Champions League campaign, after allegedly manhandling a ball boy during their last game of the recently-ended season of Africa’s premier club competition. Swallows travel on Monday to Tanzania.
