MBABANE – The Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) can walk tall as one of its members yesterday won the muscle war in the Barbosa Classic Competition.

This was at the posh Emfuleni Lifestyle yesterday, where over 200 spectators were thrilled with a muscle showdown and witnessed the Eswatini army man, Simanga Maziya was once again proving to be a cut above the rest as he defended his title in the over 80kg senior men’s category before being crowned the overall winner as well. He walked away with the E5 000 grand prize, trophy and gold medal.

Maziya thrilled the crowd with intense freestyle, including abdominal and thigh, as well as front chest poses.  In the under-80kg for men, last year’s winner Sanele Msibi came third in his division. He was beaten by Mozambique’s Silvino Duana.
“This marks the end of my bodybuilding competition race. I am glad to bow out as the champion and I want to give these hard-working young men a chance. I would like to encourage them to persevere because this is more than just a sport but a lifestyle which demands guts and discipline. The development of the sport in the country is amazing and hopefully one day the kingdom’s bodybuilders will compete in international competitions,” said Maziya.

Meanwhile, about 50 enthusiastic athletes participated in the tournament after enduring intense training and following a strict diet in preparation. The competition featured local and visiting contestants from Mozambique and South Africa. Participants were judged according to mass, symmetry, definition and stage presence.

Also, the competition hosted by Arnaldo Barbosa opened with the ladies, with 40-year-old Neli Nkonyane leading the way. Nkonyane was among achievers on the day as she was recognised and awarded a trophy under the Ladies Sports Model category. She inspired the crowd when she revealed a poster-sized picture of herself before she started working out. She was amazing for the audience as they saw how she transformed from being overweight to the current muscular person she is.
However, winning the overall prize in the ladies’ division was 25-year-old Mozambican, Cicilia Rodgolie. She said she was pleased with the achievement and promised to return for next year’s Barbosa Classic Competition. The ladies were also a hit with the male dominated audience.
