MBABANE – Mbabane Highlanders are on the verge of strengthening their structures by bringing on board some of their celebrated legends.

At least four former players that include the well-known duo of Phumuza ‘ El Khatib’ Ntshangase and retired shot-stopper Sipho Dube have been identified to help in the technical department. The former, according to impeccable sources, was set to be named the side’s technical director.

The other retired stars are Mxolisi Nana ‘Take me Home’ Dlamini and Mzwandile ‘Tito’ Mabuza. Team Chairman Zweli Jele could only confirm that the team had discussed plans to bring on ex-players in order to assist in the development structures of the team, but the decision had not been made final.
“We saw a need to strengthen our development structures to have competitive Under-17s and Under-20s. We felt the former players could assist in this regard. However, the last time I checked, nothing had been finalised,” said Jele.

Ntshangase’s phone repeatedly rang unanswered when sought for comment on the latest developments.
The latter is also a seasoned sports administrator after being in leadership in both the Eswatini School Sports Association (ESSA) and the Manzini Regional Football Association (MRFA).

Former shot-stopper, Dube, who also won two Man of the Match awards in COSAFA Cup while still at national team, Sihlangu, has gained valuable experience over the years. He was recently goalkeeper coach at Sihlangu.

Reports had further suggested that the players could be groomed for the senior team coaching positions, but interim coach Bongani Mhlongo will be allowed to continue without interference at this stage. Sources had said the ex-players were due to be introduced to players on Tuesday but that did not happen.

This proposed move comes barely two weeks after South African coach, Mlungisi ‘Professor’ Ngubane left the club. Ngubane was expected to be replaced as a few coaches had been identified as capable replacements but the club turned around and announced Mhlongo would be in charge until the entire first round and if he proves himself right for the job, he will finish the season.

These former players are expected to also advise him, especially Ntshangase, who is earmarked as the club’s Technical Director.
Efforts to reach the other legends also proved futile at the time this report was compiled.
