MBABANE – Mbabane Highlanders have given Bongani Mhlongo the first round of the MTN Premier League to prove his worth as a coach at the club.

The black and white outfit has put on hold the recruitment of a new coach after the departure of South Africa’s Mlungisi ‘Professor’ Ngubane.  Highlanders had lined up the trio of former coach Meck Mwase, former Manzini Sundowns Leopard coach Manfred Chabinga and former Matsapha United and Zimbabwe national Under-20 mentor Saul Chaminuka. According to close sources, Mwase, who once led the ‘Black Bull’ in 2015, was leading the race of taking over before the impressive performance of the club under Mhlongo. He has been given the reigns until the end of the first round.

Mhlongo, who was assistant to Ngubane, led Highlanders to a 2-1 win over Malanti Chiefs before settling for a goalless draw against Young Buffaloes last Sunday at Somhlolo National Stadium. Ngubane tendered his resignation after losing 1-3 to rivals Mbabane Swallows during the opening games of the 2018/19 MTN Premier League. “Mhlongo has a point to prove and he has been given the first round to lead the team. The management was impressed with the club’s performance in the past two games,” said the source.

Highlanders Secretary Mphumelelo Mnisi said the team directors are yet to meet over the coaching post. He said for now nothing has been confirmed. Mhlongo could not be reached for comment as his cellphone was off by late yesterday afternoon. Highlanders play Manzini Sundowns on Sunday at Somhlolo National Stadium in a double-header. The game will kick-off at 1:30pm, and it will be followed by a clash between Green Mamba and Mbabane Swallows at 3:30pm.
