MBABANE – It’s either you are in or out of the Imbube Marathon.

Registration for the Imbube Marathon has been closed and over 3 000 runners have registered. Registration was closed last Saturday. SNPF Senior Marketing and Communications officer Mlungisi Dlamini confirmed this yesterday. The biggest road race in the country is only 10 days away, as the gun will fired on October 7 at Somhlolo National Stadium, where over 3 000 runners are expect to  cascade for the four races under the Swaziland National Pension Fund (SNPF) sponsored race. Runners will be competing in the 42km, with the main challenge being the notorious Malagwane Hill, 21km to go via Langeni and Ezulwini, 10km and the 3km.

Timeline to the race:

The most important thing for a first-time marathoner to know is that absolutely nothing you can do during the last 10 days will make you any faster on marathon day. Keep week day workouts to 30 minutes. It’s fine to do some easy cross-training on non-running days, as long as the activity doesn’t make your muscles sore or have the potential to cause injury. If you don’t want to exercise on days you don’t run, that’s OK, too. End this week with a 45-minute run on Sunday.

One Week before:

Run for 30 minutes on Tuesday and Thursday. Chill out or walk on Monday and Wednesday. (Find out if you need to take a break from training in 10 signs you need a rest day.)

Two Days before:

Rest, or run very easy for 2km. Check the forecast, make a list, then pack your race bag. Include a garbage bag or rain jacket for bad weather, the clothing and fuel you’ve tested on your long runs, race information and a pacing chart or your run/walk/run timer. Plan to get eight hours of sleep.
