MBABANE – Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) athlete Sifiso Sibandze will be running using sneakers the same as those of world marathon dominant Mohamed Farah.

Farah, who rules the world when it comes to long distance races, wears Nike sneakers when running a marathon. Sibandze, who is a double winner of the Imbube Marathon, confirmed that his sponsors have agreed to assist him in securing the sneakers.

He said running shoes played a pivotal role in an athletes performance when running, especially on the road. He said athletes should use the best sneakers they are comfortable in if you want to perform at your best.

The Imbube marathon is billed for October 7, starting and finishing at Somhlolo National Stadium. About 5 000 runners are expected to participate in the marathon, that also includes a half marathon (21km), 10km and 3km. The winner of the race will take home E25 000 and the first liSwati to cross the finish line will pocket the same amount. Sibandze has been the winner of both prizes and he pocketed a total of E100 000 in the past two editions of the race.

The race has seen international athletes dominating it and this year Kenya nationals, who are king and queens of the road are expected to grace the event.
The race is sponsored by the Eswatini National Pension Fund and is the biggest race so far in the Eswatini athletics calendar.

Registration for the race closes on Saturday after a week’s extension from last Saturday due to the demand of runners rushing for the last minute registration.
