MBABANE – The dream of playing in the FIFA World Cup for the national Under-17 disappeared yesterday when they lost with a solitary goal to Malawi in the COSAFA Under-17 Youth Championships in Mauritius.
The local side finished third in Group C of the championships ahead of Angola who qualified for the semi-finals and Malawi who finished second after the victory yesterday. The winners of the championships will qualify to play in the Under-17 World Cup billed for Peru late this year.
The Velekhaya Mthethwa-led side finished third in the group with three points as they only managed a 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe and lost 4-0 to Angola.
In yesterday’s game, Malawi grabbed their goal through Lovemore Mbeta. After the goal Malawi had to withstand some heavy pressure from the local side. Kendrik Maseko forced Malawi goalkeeper Kennedy Nankhaima into a number of fine saves. The Young Flames (Malawi) could not find the extra strike they needed and so bowed out with their heads held high, but short of the semi-finals.
