MBABANE – The choice has been made – South African coach Mlungisi ‘Professor’ Ngubane is not going anywhere but the Mbabane Highlanders Management Committee (MC).

This is after the capital city giants’ Chairman of the Board of Directors Zweli Jele, disclosed that the current MC will be dissolved following a dispute with head coach Ngubane. The two parties do not see eye to eye as they have accused the other of interference which led to the coach threatening to resign en masse if this issue was not resolved amicably.

The directors, through Jele, have said that due to undefined roles, some officials were overlapping on other people’s responsibilities, consequently calling for the dissolve of the MC.

“Both the coach and the CEO have brought the team into disrepute by discussing these matters in the public domain. I will address this with them. There have been structural challenges within the team and these were a result of undefined roles, overlap of responsibilities, etc. These challenges were with us even last season. We are working to resolve them,” Jele said.

He further said that in an effort to address some of the challenges; “We (Directors, MC & Supporters Committee) met on July 3rd and adopted a new structure that will be used to run the team going forward. Key to this is that the current over-bloated MC will be dissolved and a smaller unit created. We will have a smaller group with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. As soon as we have completed the registration of players for the new season, we will dissolve the current MC,” Jele said.

He also said that an announcement to this effect will be made in due course.
“We observed that once you have too many people, there’s always conflict. The outgoing MC had become dysfunctional, some members were no longer attending meetings, they were always at loggerheads with one another, administrative issues were simply not being done and as directors, we were really frustrated by the state of affairs,” he said

“You must understand that both Khumalo (Marwick) and I are passionate about Highlanders but not necessarily about soccer in general. You will have observed that for example, last season, we attended less than 50% of the team’s games. We are both very committed in our respective responsibilities and as such, we need people who can run this team on a day to day basis. We are looking for people who are self-starters and go-getters,” he said.

Meanwhile, when Ngubane was reached for comment, he preferred not to comment. The team’s CEO Celucolo ‘Dino’ Dlamini also declined to comment saying it was best once this had been communicated to them officially.
“I think it is not right to comment when the chairman has spoken until they address you in person. For now, I cannot comment,” Dlamini said.
