MBABANE – Eswatini’s SKRUM programme is now making waves globally after being profiled by Cable News Network Sport.

CNN is a renowned American basic cable and satellite television news channel. SKRUM CEO and Founder Michael Collinson, who is also former Swaziland Rugby Union (SRU) president, got to share successes of his programme with the rest of the world a few days ago.

With the motto ‘Pass the ball, not the virus,” the SKRUM imitative uses rugby as a way to understand and prevent the contraction of HIV and AIDS among young people.
Collinson, during the interview, stressed that the answer to combating HIV and AIDS and educating young people was educating young people.

“Ignore the youth, ignore the future,” he said.
Collinson was involved in a car accident in 2002 and got confined to a wheel chair, but he said his dream lived on.
“ Five years later, after suffering for long periods from depression, he (Collinson) set up SKRUM in Swaziland, a charity that aims, through rugby, to educate children about HIV and AIDS.

“The charity has visited 650 of Swaziland’s 817 schools in the past 10 years,” read part of the interview.
It is 10 years since Collinson started his charity SKRUM, which is an acronym for Swaziland Kids Rugby Mission. Combining field work with classroom sessions for older pupils, allows the charity to get its message across to 600 children a day.
