MBABANE – Inspite of the national team, Sihlangu horror show in the COSAFA Castle Cup recently, the National Football Association of Eswatini is sticking to its guns!

Despite the mammoth task that lies ahead in the shape of Egypt and Tunisia on the horizon in the qualifiers for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the National Football Association of Eswatini (NFAE) is set to stick to the current technical team led by Anthony Mdluli.

Mdluli, who led Sihlangu in the recent COSAFA Cup in South Africa, was appointed together with Caleb Ngwenya after the sacking of Peter De Jongh early this year. Their continuation at the helm will be contrary to expectations of many Sihlangu fans as a change appeared imminent after the dreadful showing by the team in the COSAFA Cup.

The scary part of proceedings is the fact that both Tunisia and Egypt are currently competing in the FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, and they are likely to be sharp as razor blades by the time they face the locals in what will be arguably the most important matches of the calendar for all the teams involved.

NFAS Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe confirmed yesterday that nothing had changed as far as the issue of Sihlangu coaches was concerned. He said the current technical bench was expected to prepare the team to compete in the AFCON qualifiers irrespective of the kind of challenge that lies ahead.

“Until the NFAS appoints a full-time coach, the current team of coaches are in charge for the AFCON qualifiers. We are fully aware that the games will be tough and are drawing closer, but at present there is no process I know of that has changed the status quo,” he said.
