LOBAMBA – A last gasp goal by Bayanda Mthethwa was enough to win St Mary’s Primary School the first edition of the Pick ’n Pay Under-15 Primary Schools FA Development tournament.

Mthethwa netted with just three minutes to go in the 15-minute long second half of the tightly contested match played at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday.

He received a defence-splitting pass from Wandile Mavuso to tap from close range and inspired his side to the historical win. Despite that the Comfort Dlamini-led side seemed to lose the ball often, they eventually turned the tide and won the game.
Mthethwa said he was happy to score the winner for St Mary’s.

“This is like a mission accomplished for me as I wanted to make my presence felt. At one point, I thought they would beat us because they had an upper hand, especially in the first half. When I got the opportunity, I made sure it counted and luckily it was the winning goal,” Mthethwa said.

Mahlanya’s Lindelani Masuku said despite dominating the game they failed to utilise their chances.
“We missed clear-cut chances and we have ourselves to blame as we could have won the game in the first half,”Masuku said.
The champions were leaders in group D of the tournament that was first played in a round-robin system.

They went on to beat Elangeni 1-0 in the quarter-finals and further sent Lamgabhi packing with the same score margin in the semi-finals.
Mahlanya, on the other hand, emerged as leaders in Group E and beat Esitjeni 2-0 in the quarter-finals before brushing aside Lobamba National 8-7 after penalties. The match had ended in a 1-all draw in regular time.
