MBABANE – South Africa’s PSL side Polokwane City seem to have won the battle for Mbabane Swallows’ talented midfielder Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze.

This follows that Polokwane City, also renowned as Rise and Shine, have already paid the E450 000 for the player to Swallows. This is after he allegedly signed on the Rise and Shine dotted line ahead of Bidvest Wits, who were favourites to land him after impressing in a week-trial.

“Polokwane won the player some time ago. He long signed with them and they even paid E450 000 for him,” sources close to the matter and well-placed at Swallows revealed, as stories linking him to Wits keep on coming, the latest in yesterday’s Soccer Laduma’s Siyagobhoza gossip page. It is an open secret that Wits’ coach Gavin Hunt fell in love with the youngster but Polokwane acted swiftly to win his signature, it is claimed. It is also understood a South African-based Swazi agent, whose name is deliberately withheld, was crucial in seeing the Polokwane deal through.

It is also expected that he joins his new suitors next month when most PSL sides resume preseason for the cash-spinning and gruelling ABSA Premiership. This could see him missing Mbabane Swallows’ CAF Champions League next Group D clash at home to Tunisia’s fourth-ranked side in Africa, Étoile du Sahel on July 17.

“As Mbabane Swallows’ general manager, all I can say is when the time is right, we’ll meet and then make a statement. We’re aware of all the news that are being written here and beyond,” Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane said when questioned yesterday.
When pressed with further information on the transfer fee, Zwane insisted an official statement would be issued.

“People need to understand that it’s that time of the season when players can belong to anyone, and we’re also expecting to make some signings, so it is only then that we’ll make an official statement on any transfers in the club,” he responded while stating he was also out of the country to be discussing the team’s news.

However, Zwane made it clear that while the news kept coming, especially the Bidvest part in yesterday’s Soccer Laduma, that they were once again in front of Polokwane to get the player, they have no comment.

“They can say what they like but we’ll make our statement once all was okay to do so. And I’m not denying nor confirming anything in what you are asking me, save to say we’ll talk in due course. After all what’s the player saying,” he said regarding the transfer fee and signing of Sikhondze with Polokwane.
