MBABANE – Record-breaking Mbabane Swallows will strike it rich, if they go beyond the group stages in the Total CAF Champions League.

The capital city giants, who are joint top with Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel in Group D of the CAF Champions League, are guaranteed at least E8.3 million, if they reach the quarter-finals. This is according to the tournament prize breakdown. The actual amount Mbabane Swallows can get is E8 300 500.  They can get 650 000 US Dollars, which is equivalent to the said amount, according to the current 12.77 exchange rate. The red and white ensemble need at least seven points in their four remaining games to be guaranteed a place in the last eight of Africa’s premier club competition. Team General Manager Sandile Zwane said the team was determined to leave a mark in their first attempt, saying they were targeting to at least reach the semi-finals. If Swallows were to reach the semi-finals, they can pocket a whopping E11.1 million.

“Our focus is on conquering Africa, and we believe we have what it takes to reach the semi-finals,” said Zwane yesterday. Coach Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati, in a recent interview on national radio, had stressed on taking it one game at a time.
Swallows have already outdone themselves by defying all odds to reach the group stages for the first time. This achievement comes with a cash injection of about E6.8 million.  The winners, according to the current exchange rate, pocket around E31 million, while runners-up walk away with E15.9 million. Swallows’ bid to conquer Africa will continue when they welcome Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel for a top-of-the-table clash on July 17. The winner will lead the pack.  Both teams are on four points following a win and a draw in their first two opening matches.   The last match in the group stages will be against Primeiro de Agosto away in Angola on August 28.
