MBABANE – It was heartbreak for Special Vehicle drivers John ‘Mashesha’ Thomson and Maurice Zermatten after suffering a setback in their race over the weekend.

The former Class P champions in a MORMOND-branded Zarco Magnum were at KwaZulu-Natal for round two of the South African Cross Country Series (SACCS), but were forced to retire following mechanical issues on the second of 170 kilometre loops that made up the race.
According to a correspondence copied to this publication, it proved to be a day of drama and surprises as KwaZulu-Natal crew Andre and Ralph Voigts scored a maiden national championship victory when they won on the day.

“The Voigts started the day in third place, behind qualifying race winners Lance Trethewey and Adriaan Roets (LTE BAT Viper) and former Class P champions John Thomson and Maurice Zermatten in a Zarco Magnum.

“The KZN crew then found themselves in the lead when Trethewey/Roets and Thomson/Zermatten both retired with mechanical issues on the second of 170 kilometre loops that made up the race. ‘Mashesha’ had a mechanical problem 80km from the end as the CV suffered metal fatigue,” reads the correspondence.

All is not lost for the duo, as there is an opportunity to make amends in Botswana. The next event on the SACCS calendar takes competitors to Botswana for the iconic Toyota 1 000 Desert Race from June 22 to 24.
