AAS, SNSRC’S E40 000 BOOST

LOBAMBA – Team Swaziland have received a major boost ahead of their Regional and Youth Championship games in South Africa.


The team which comprises 24 athletes and six officials yesterday bid farewell at OlympAfrica for Johannesburg, South Africa for the annual youth games. Leading the delegation was Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) General Secretary Thoba Mazibuko.


The athletes representing the country are from Swaziland National School Sports Association, private and independent schools and local clubs. The squad is separated into two section, an Under 18 and 20 teams.


Speaking to the Sports Desk, Mazibuko confirmed  that the association together with Swaziland National Sports and Recreational Council (SNSRC) partnered to foot the E40 000 bill for the trip.


“We are leaving today (yesterday) for South Africa, and for the duration of the three days we will be staying at Birchwood Hotel. The games will be held at Boksburg Stadium. The competition will start tomorrow (today) and is expected to end on Saturday,” Mazibuko said.


Meanwhile, SNSRC’s Zama Tsabedze bid farewell to the delegation and also urged the athletes to do the country proud.
“I want to challenge the athletes to get as many medals as they can from this annual event. I believe you have been chosen because you deserve to be among the team, so go there and do us proud as a country,” Tsabedze said.


The athletes will partake in track and field and athletics. There are 11 countries including Swaziland and host Country South Africa that would be part of the two day event. These are Angola, Seychelles, Malawi, Namibia, Zimbabawe, Zambia, Mauritius and Botswana.
