MBABANE – A tough test awaits some local runners ahead of the celebrated Comrades Marathon in South Africa.

Zithande Athletics Club has lined up a 105km run from Manzini to Lomahasha as part of their mileage training ahead of the June 10 international race. Club Founder Nsizwa Thwala said the preparatory run will start at Zakhele Sports Ground in Manzini at 4aa. Slower runners will spend the night at Simunye, where the club will have a camp.

Thwala said enduring the longest distance would come in handy in the quest to leave a mark in the Comrades Marathon.
“To excel in something, you have to go beyond your limit. Comrades Marathon is 90km, but we will run a longer distance. Focus will be on the time we will spend on the road.
“We will have a recovery run on the following day. Runners from other clubs are also most welcome,” he said.

The club is fresh from another torturous three-day 100km run during the Easter weekend. The runners covered 46km, 33km and 21km running in Manzini and surrounding areas. The event was organised by Fit Swazi.
Meanwhile, the club is expected to send at least 22 runners to the Comrades. The club targets to reap at least five silver medals. Two medals were reaped in the past year by the daring duo of Ntokozo Mamba and Blessing Kunene.
They were the fastest Swazis in the famous race, which takes centre stage at South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal.
