MBABANE – He is back in the sports fraternity. Former Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) CEO Sydney Simelane is back in the same position but this time around at the Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (SOCGA). Simelane took over from Muriel Hofer, who resigned two months ago.

Simelane came top of 15 other candidates who applied for the vacant position. He will resume his duties on April 3. Simelane, who served at the PLS for four seasons, signed a four-year contract, which means he will be in office until 2022.

He was introduced by SOCGA President Peter Shongwe, who departed for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia yesterday. Shongwe said Simelane came top of all the candidates who were interviewed by the Board.

“We congratulate Simelane on the appointment and we are confident that he will improve the association, especially with his vast experience in sports. Simelane held several senior positions before joining SOCGA; He has experience as a Sports club administrator. The Board met on Tuesday where Simelane was confirmed,” he said.

Among Simelane’s target in the new position is to try and come up with podium finish athletes in international competitions. Simelane served in other entities including Caltex, MTN Swaziland, Swaziland Beverages and Project and Marketing Manager for African Union Sports Council Region 5 based in Botswana for several years.
Simelane said he was humbled by the appointment to work in an organisation that has ambitions for sports development in the country.
“This is not a new environment for me as I have served within the sporting fraternity. We are going to work with all the stakeholders and make sure that SOCGA as an organisation moves forward,” he said.
