LOBAMBA – Revenge, the ancient wise-man observed, is a dish best served cold. Indeed Green Mamba were dining on thin ice here yesterday as a bulldozing Mbabane Highlanders trampled on the toothless ‘Correctional Services’ side who all but kissed goodbye any remote mathematical chances of catching up with defending league champions, Mbabane Swallows.

On a Y’ello Sunday, before a partisan crowd of slightly over 3 000 people, Highlanders avenged the first round 3-0 loss to Green Mamba at the same pitch on October 28, 2017 with a gusto performance which not only sent their honey-throated supporters into untold scenes of jubilation but even the humongous coach, Mlungisi ‘Professor’ Ngubane pelvis-gyrating on the terraces like a ballet dancer at the sound of the final whistle. It was a sight to behold.
The day had started with the enthralling 2-all draw between Manzini Wanderers and Matsapha United which was worth its weight in entertainment value.

But certainly, it was the second match of the day, which marked a scintillating day of football for the blessed souls who were worshipping on the altar of football yesterday.
If Green Mamba’s treacherous 25 yard out screamer by Banele ‘Banny’ Mdluli in the 62nd minute cancelling the opener headed in by Highlanders Zambian import Charles Musonda, impressive South African striker, Thabiso Mokenkoane’s fourth league goal of the season was so sweet it could have been eaten as a dessert.

His composure, after receiving a Xolani ‘Chocco’ Sibandze lacerating defence freezing pass which would have defied all the rules of geometry, was simply magical and his finishing was sizzling. Goalkeeper, Thokozani Mkhulisi could not be blamed. Goalkeepers to save such kind of tracer-bullet shots are yet to be born.

The goal, a match clincher in its own right, triggered the kind of celebrations in the Highlanders grand-stand that threatened to blow the stadium roof off its hinges and continued even outside the club’s dressing rooms where the fans danced like nobody was watching.

The overjoyed Highlanders fans were not to be blamed. The country’s football aristocrats had avenged a depressing 3-0 loss to Green Mamba on that fateful Saturday afternoon of October 28, 2017, in grand style.
