MBABANE – The senior women football team, Sitsebe Samhlekazi ,must have all the reason to believe on a first ever appearance at the Total Women Africa Cup of Nations.

Following an impressive showing at the recently ended COSAFA Women’s Championships in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, focus turns to the 2018 Women AFCON, where a relatively easy draw against Lesotho is on the table. The 2018 Total Women AFCON will be the 13th edition of the tournament held biennially by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The tournament will be held in Ghana, from November 17 to December 1, 2018.

The tournament also doubles as the African qualifiers to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The top three teams will qualify for the World Cup in France.  Sitsebe starts away in Maseru on the weekend of February 26, with the return leg a week later.  Ghana qualified automatically as hosts, while the remaining seven spots will be determined by the qualifying rounds.

Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and South Africa have all received byes in the first round of qualifiers. The four countries to have given byes will be joined in the second and final qualifies by 10 teams.

The 10 teams would have emerged as victorious in the first round before they will be joined by the top four ranked sides in Africa. CAF released the fixtures for the tournament which will be held in November next year.

A total of 20 teams will play in the first round.  Ghana’s experience of successfully hosting previous CAF tournaments in recent times (the 2009 African Youth Championship and the 2000 and 2008 Africa Cup of Nations) was important in being awarded the hosting rights.
