MBABANE – The champ is back. Widely called ‘The Champ’ by his peers, bodybuilder Simanga Maziya returned to top table in emphatic fashion after winning yesterday’s second edition of the Barbosa Classic.

Named after its brainchild, award winning bodybuilder Arnaldo Barbosa, the 2017 edition was staged at Mbabane Club to much fanfare as bodybuilders competed for podium finishes.

After strolling in the Over 80kg category, brushing aside Thabiso Zwane and Zulu Mageba, Simanga had it tough in the battle for the biggest prize of the day. He was the overall winner with stiff competition from His Majesty’s Correctional Services duo of the physically imposing Donsa Thwala and Mancoba Mamba.
Having missed last year’s event, only appearing as guest poser, Simanga once again showed why he is the man. Last year’s champion Mancoba and runner-up Donsa made him sweat for the big prize in a show watched by an impressive crowd. The panel of judges had it tough.

The criteria used in evaluating the ultimate winner includes Mass, Definition, Proportion, Symmetry, and Stage Presence, all equally important. Mass refers to the perception of muscular size. Definition indicates the degree of muscularity brought about by the absence of subcutaneous body fat. Defined muscularity is necessary to fully display the development of the physique. Proportion implies an even balance of muscular development in comparison to each muscle group. Bodybuilders must strive for equal development between all muscle groups.
