COMPETE AGAINST TIME

MBABANE - Today, time is on the cutting edge. Infact it is a strategic weapon!

This idiom by George Stalk will come in handy for Imbube marathon runners which is billed for October 8.
The second edition of the marathon is divided into four phases namely; the 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km and 3.3km and all these categories there is something to compete for, runners will be tempted to compete in order to take the first prize home. In the main race E50 000 is up for grabs for the top first Swazi finisher.

Zithande Athletics club coach Nziswa Thwala has warned athletes not to compete against each other.
All the races will start and finish at Somhlolo National Stadium.

Coach tips

First it is only those who are doing 21km and have done the Slojos race before, who can have target times to beat, otherwise the 42km is a new route. Everyone will be a first timer (novices). Even your last year’s Imbube time can’t be your time to beat because it’s a new route altogether.

So yours is to be able to run 42km within six hours. Even the last year’s winners shouldn’t run to defend but run to be the new king and queen of this new route. It should be time that you should compete with not your colleagues. However, for novice runners they should try to finish the race other than competing.

Here are some things that can put unnecessary pressure and may spoil your race.
1. Using a stopwatch on the day while you were not using it at training.
2. Running to beat a friend you haven’t trained with.
3. Worrying about race cut-off time (yours is the ability to run your chosen distance), even coming back after cut-off time, you will have finished your mission.
