STRENGTH TRAINING
MBABANE – Running a marathon comes with a lot of challenges, especially if one is a first-time runner.
We have talked on a number of subjects, including what to eat and how to train but today we will focus on strength training. Zithande Athletics Club coach Nsizwa Thwala has some tips to share on this subject.
This, we hope, will help runners conquer the second edition of Imbube marathon which is billed for October 8 at Somhlolo National Stadium.
Coach’s tips
Athletes need to do justice to their bodies by exercising every group body muscle. When running, some muscles don’t get the much needed attention to boost your running. Strength training not only works on your shape-up (toning and firming), its also helps in reducing running injury risk.
This is how you should strength train.
1. Cross-fit workout: Cross-fit training is when you do series of exercise combined: steps, sprints, squats, jumps, cycling, swimming.
2. Bootcamp: it’s all about confusing your body muscles, doing the movement you don’t do when running or walking. In bootcamping you kick, box, push-ups, ABs, aerobics, power-jumps, lunges, plank, mountain climbers etc. This workout is done at high intensity, training the body and mind.
3. Weight-training.
