WE ARE STARVED – SIHLANGU STARS

MBABANE – Professionalism is commendable anywhere in the world but for national team Sihlangu players, it is proving a nightmare – it has allegedly got them starving during camp.

Eating a controlled diet, one suitable for a professional soccer player, in the form of pasta, in particular macaroni, has got the players talking. If reports in yesterday’s SBIS radio Sport Show by broadcaster Nathi ‘Mdockies’ Hlophe are anything to by, then it is safe to say all is not well in the national team.

Hlophe reported that the Sihlangu players, who spoke on condition of anonymity, complained that they were being fed macaroni mostly and they were not pleased with the situation, citing starvation as the main challenge as they are not used to light meals.
“I will not name the players but I spoke to a number of them and they said the food was not enough to keep them going as it was often macaroni. The situation is serious to the point that a certain player even asked me for bread to secretly take to camp to complement the food they eat in camp,” he told the public during the show hosted by his colleague Moses ‘Mthetho’ Matsebula.

Hlophe went on to report that the team that lost 4-0 to Zambia on the day was not the usual Sihlangu that Swazis had known lately.
“On a normal day, that Zambia squad would not beat Sihlangu at home. Also, if nothing changes, the same Zambia team can go on and score more than five goals at home. Sihlangu was just not in the game,” he said.

Interestingly, while the players obviously have a gripe with their strict Dutch coach Pieter De Jongh, who has already sent home Young Buffaloes’ striker Phiwa Dlamini for being overweight, internet research revealed pasta is just the rightful diet for professional soccer players who want to improve their performance.
