MBABANE – Manzini Wanderers Director Sandile ‘Chief’ Dlamini has punched holes in the criteria used by the PLS in selecting teams that take part in the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup.

Mbabane Highlanders, Mbabane Swallows, Royal Leopard and the play-off winner between Moneni Pirates and Manzini Sundowns will feature in the 2017 instalment of the tournament, while Manzini Wanderers will be notable absentees. The tournament, which is set for August 27, was launched last Saturday at the Mbabane Government Hospital.

Reacting to a decision to exclude Wanderers on grounds that they failed to withdraw a pending court case with the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS), ‘Chief’ said the team welcomed the move to sideline them as ‘there was no clear criteria’ of selecting the  participating teams.

Among the selected teams, Dlamini felt only defending champions, Royal Leopard, and Mbabane Swallows deserved a slot in the tournament, which is sponsored by the Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC). He decried the exclusion of Young Buffaloes, who were runners-up in the league, while also frowning on the decision to include Highlanders, who finished ranked 11th.
“For us it is a blessing in disguise. It was not worth it because we were not sure if the prize money would not be deducted again. We don’t mind missing out as the criteria is baseless.

“It is within our rights to demand our money following the deduction under unclear circumstances. We’re not fighting SPTC, but we are not happy with the way the PLS does things. The sponsor is unlucky to be caught up in the issue,” said Dlamini.
