EZULWINI – ‘I don’t want football but football wants me’. That is the statement returning National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) President Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa told journalists after scoring a massive win to retain his position, which for once looked uncertain with other strong candidates in Mashumi Shongwe and COSAFA Executive member Timothy Shongwe.

Coming in as Vice-Presidents were Comfort Shongwe and Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane, following the NFAS General Assembly, which included the much-anticipated item of executive elections at Sibane Hotel yesterday.
His strongest rival here was Mashumi but when time for voting came, the figures that Electoral Officer Mbuso Simelane announced proved that delegates kept their loyalty to Mthethwa as he got 28 votes to the meagre 11 and nine Timothy and Mashumi managed.

Mthethwa and some of his voters including the PLS were so excited when the results were announced. He could not hold his joy and immediately left the arena to enjoy his excitement elsewhere in the hotel. This is now his fourth term in office and he can still stand in the next elections four years from now.

“I feel so humbled. In football we have elections every four years but I must thank and appreciate the fact that football people have felt I am still the person they want for football development in this country. I believe the elections have passed and the candidates know we all need each other for different ideas,” Mthethwa said.

He said sometimes they appeared to be in serious conflict but that is just how things worked in football.
“I heard people’s sentiments and know they want change but wouldn’t talk about what that meant. If it meant change of face then I wouldn’t be president right now but if it’s change in the way we do things, then I’m ready to serve and do things in a different way. I’ve outgrown football as I’ve lived it all my life so I don’t want football but football wants me,” he excitedly said.

He further thanked all the delegates for keeping faith in him as they voted for him. He said it showed that they believed he could still help football.
“I also thank all participants in the election. There is no winner or loser in football as we all work for a common objective; to develop football in the country. The reality is that we need each other as we have different strengths,” he said.
He also acknowledged the concerns made by delegates and promised they would all be looked into as he was clear that some things needed to be done differently.
