MANZINI – New USDF Athletics Club recruit Melusi Khumalo announced his arrival in emphatic fashion.

Khumalo won the annual KwaMagogo 10km race, beating his trainer and established athlete Veli Dlamini who is fresh from representing the country at the World Cross Country Championships in Uganda. He clocked 29:15 minutes to loudly announce his arrival with his personal best finish being third at the Tuff One half marathon back in March.

It seemed for the duration of the race, Melusi and Veli worked as a team, sticking to each other like glue from the start. Khumalo benefitted from mainly the stiffness of the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) athletes who are currently undergoing army training at Mbuluzi. Notably, Melusi Sihlongonyane and Ntokozo Dlamini, who have been in sensational form in the current athletics calendar year prior to army training, struggled in this particular race.
Khumalo paid tribute to Veli and said they worked well as a pair.

“I have been training and know him from Madvulwini Primary School. He is improving and will be better than me. I like the way he maintains my pace and surely he is coming up to be a great runner,” Veli said of the winner after crossing the finishing line.
