MBABANE – Thirteen days before the NFAS goes to the polls, their battle with suspended Vice President Mashumi Shongwe has taken another interesting twist.

In a circular released by the National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) secretariat last Friday to affiliates and leaked to this publication, Shongwe has been disqualified in the race for presidential position on the grounds of his pending High Court case where he is challenging his suspension from all football activities by the NFAS.

Shongwe was nominated by the Referees Association to contest for the position of president where he was set to clash head-on with incumbent President Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa and former Vice President Timothy Shongwe.
“NFAS members are informed that the candidature or nomination of the Vice President Mashumi Shongwe for the position of president at the forthcoming election has been disqualified on account of his suspension from all football activities, pending the outcome of the High Court case where he is currently challenging the sanctions imposed on him,” read the circular in part.

Interestingly, the validation of nominated candidates is done by the current office instead of an independent electoral body.
The NFAS will hold its electoral General Assembly on Sunday, June 25 at Sibane Hotel, Ezulwini starting at 10am.

“In terms of Article 34 (2), the president, two vice presidents and two members of the executive committee, will be elected by the General Assembly.
“The candidates in the Circular 102 dated June 9, 2017 released by the NFAS General Secretary Frederick Mngomezulu have been validated in observance to Article 34 (5) a)-f) for the election of the vice presidents and executive committee members; and Article 34 (5) a)-f) and 40 (5) for the election of the president,” the Circular continues.
