14-TEAM PREMIER LEAGUE A NO NO!

The rumour that next season the Premier League of Swaziland teams might be increased to 14 teams is a ‘sick joke’ that should not bother right thinking people.

The timing of the rumour is not only sickening but very disturbing not only to the 12 teams that are competing in this year’s MTN League but also to the 12 teams playing in the second division, as well as to the sponsors and the entire football fraternity.
Looking back at history, one could remind those with short memories that the Premier League then called First Division used to have 16 teams.

When the powers that be, with a devious intention to protect certain teams from being relegated to the Regional Leagues, the senior division ended up having 18 teams and eventually 22 teams at one stage.

The then Swaziland National Football Association( SNFA), being the custodian of local football put a stop to all the madness and decided to restore the senior division to a 16-team league.
The teams were eventually reduced to 12 teams in all divisions of the renamed National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) due to a shortage of stadiums.

Remember that if one were to alter the number of teams in the Premier League, it means one must also alter the number of teams in the second division, as well as in all regional leagues, resulting in altering the number of teams in the country officially registered with the National Football Association of Swaziland.
