MBABANE – Some of the country’s communities will come to a standstill as Swaziland welcomes the Queen’s Baton on Monday.

The country is the16th of 71 Commonwealth destinations for the Queen’s Baton Relay. The relay is a curtain-raiser for next year’s Commonwealth Games to be staged in Gold Coast, Australia.  The baton, which has a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II, is simply an invitation to the games.

It will be brought by Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Luoise Martin.
The relay will take place on Tuesday and the following day, with both the CGF president and the baton arriving on the eve of the festivities through the King Mswati III International Airport. It will travel to communities throughout the country in an attempt to connect the people and share the celebration.

Athletes from different sporting codes will be the bearers. It will be paraded through the streets of Mbabane. Following the relay, a cocktail reception will be held at the Olympafrica Centre in Lobamba. Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (SOCGA) President, Peter Shongwe, said they were looking forward to welcoming the Queen’s Baton.

“Hosting the Queen’s Baton Relay presents our region with a unique opportunity to showcase its people, heritage, culture and environment to the rest of the Commonwealth,” said Shongwe.

SOCGA CEO, Muriel Hofer, said the Queen’s Baton Relay was something that everyone should be a part of.
“I encourage everyone to turn up to see the baton, join in the festivities and cheer on the baton bearers.
