‘BULL’ LIVE TO SEE ANOTHER DAY

My dearest readers...Great events shape the lives of institutions and those who are part of them.

The Chinese are still affected by the Tiananmen Square massacre; the Scots are still upset with the Culloden; Liverpool by the Hillsborough; Juventus by the Heysel; Bradford City by the fire and Orlando Pirates, and that other team from Soweto, whose name would crash this laptop if I were to type it here, by the Ellis Park disaster.

These great and terrible events become part of the way people see the world. We are all, to an extent, defined by the terrible events we survive. That is true of the private events that involve us.

When one-time the country’s football aristocrats, the most successful club (whether my friend Mbabane Swallows CEO Sibusiso Manana likes it or not) with 12 league titles under their banner, Mbabane Highlanders were relegated three seasons ago for the first time since formation in 1952, it marked the end of an ‘error’ as it were.

It was a salient moment as ‘Inkunzemnyama’ after years of misrule took the long, lonely road to the wilderness – the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) orphan – the National First Division league. “May the last man to leave the Bull’s Kraal, please switch off the lights!”, read a headline of an article in this State-Of-The-Nation-Sports-Address (SONSA), Lwazi’s Pandora’s Box, at the time when history books were re-written.

On a week when the world cheered on as one of the greatest English side, Newcastle United, the Magpies (a team I would have supported if Manchester United was not my father’s favourite team) returned to the premier league next season following a 4-1 win over Preston at the iconic St James Park on Monday night, it was gratifying to note that Highlanders eased their relegation woes with the 2-1 victory over Green Mamba at Mayaluka Stadium on Sunday.
