MBABANE – The belief in supernatural powers (muti) is certainly draining local football teams especially when match officials include related incidents in the reports.

After the past weekend’s MTN Premier League games, Manzini Wanderers are the latest club that could suffer immensely after their marshals got into a fight with a fan, who had strayed in the technical area.

This was before the start of their game against Mbabane Highlanders, who needed to win at all costs as they want to survive relegation. The incident, which was rescued by police officers, after a big struggle themselves as the marshals clung onto the fan and even strangled him in the process, could cost the maroon and white side E85 000 maximum in fines.

The league’s Rules and Regulations in Article 7 (b), (d) and (e) were breached by the marshals but it cannot be put in good authority at the moment that they will be charged for it. PLS COO Pat Vilakati said while they witnessed the unfortunate incident, his office had not yet seen the match officials’ reports as they have up to close of business today to submit them.

“It’s hard to say if any team will be charged at this point in time until we get to sit down and go through all the reports from the weekend games and those reports are still coming to our office but if it was captured, we’ll apply the rules as they are,” he said.

Article 7 (b), should Wanderers be charged and found guilty, states that ‘Threatening by conduct or words to assault or attempt to assault a referee, PLS official, player, club official, marshal, supporter, fan, spectator – a minimum fine of E10 000 and a maximum fine of E30 000. In addition, the offending club shall be ordered to compensate the victim for any financial loss incurred due to the assault by the DC.’
