MZIMPOFU – Youngsters ‘brought home’ a sizeable catch during a development tournament yesterday.

The event was organised by the Swaziland Angling Association (SAA) at Lester Dam just outside Mzimpofu in Manzini. Among those who left a mark was eight-year-old motocross rider, Tiano Fraser, who capitalised on ‘home ground’ advantage. He celebrated catching a couple of bass fish.
Triplets Angela, Daniel and Gabrielle Panaino also left fellow competitors green with envy.

While some anglers managed to get the normal bass, bream fish was dominant. It is known for its flattened and high-backed body as well as a slightly undershot mouth.
Unlike in premier angling competitions, the participants angled from boats, using mainly earthworm as bait. The fish was also not weighed before it was dipped into the dam.

Winners were those with the most number of fish.
One of the facilitators, Louis van Zuydam, who is a seasoned national team angler, was impressed by the juniors’ enthusiasm and predicted a bright future for the sport.

“Some parents are still reluctant to bring their children closer to dams, but the interest in the sport is growing,” said van Zuydam.
At the time of compiling this report, the event was still underway. Winners were expected to be announced later on the day. The festivities were punctuated with a raffle draw. The attendees were also made to guess the weight of bass that was brought to the host venue. Over 20 anglers were already at the venue by 10am. The handicapped were also allowed to take part, but they were yet to storm the venue by 11am yesterday.
