E250 000 MTN WINDFALL FOR BASKETBALL

EZULWINI - MTN Swaziland certainly is becoming a good friend to sports in the country.
As of yesterday, basketball in the country will never be the same – all thanks to the giant mobile phone company which has injected E250 000 into the sport.

This is by far the biggest ever sponsorship in the history of the Swaziland National Basketball Association (SNBA). The major breakthrough for the youth supported sport was launched yesterday at the MTN Swaziland Headquarters in Ezulwini.

Most certainly, the company is getting used to these launches as they are also sponsoring the country’s   soccer elite and First Division Leagues, golf and cycling. Speaking during the launch, MTN CEO Ambrose Dlamini noted that they were aware that basketball is one of the sports that were faced with challenges in terms of financial support.
“We understand that the basketball league is funded largely through subscriptions from clubs. That in itself painfully demonstrates the level of need for sponsorship,” said Dlamini.

“Swazi MTN believes that basketball is one sport that constructively occupies young people’s time. Because it is fun, and gender inclusive, the company made a deliberate choice to support this sport. Our considered view is that a little push, in the form of sponsorship, will help improve participation in the sport from grassroots, regional, up to national and professional level,” he explained.

The CEO further said they were of the view that the sponsorship would go a long way in strengthening continuity for players in schools, who would like to proceed and play league basketball, after high school.
