MBABANE – The RSSC Siyakha Grassroots football programme resumed with a bang as over 150 boys and girls took part.

The development programme was held at Jack Hersov Primary School in Tambankhulu on Thursday.  The second edition saw the participants joyfully go about their paces inside the field of play under the watchful eye of five coach educators.

Top referee Mambush Magaya, Gcina Mkhabela and Tabankulu Callies striker Menzi Dlamini taught the youngsters the necessary skills in passing, drilling and small-sided games, which the children were evidently enjoying throughout the two-hour event. Some teachers from Lusoti Primary School, who are also educators, were part of the event. The educators volunteered to impart the basic football skills to the young pupils.

Actually, this event marked the start of the grassroots event in schools this year since it was last hosted in 2016. And it was evident from the performance of the participants that they were already yearning for more. The event also attracted huge spectatorship from parents in neighbouring areas who watched, albeit with excitement, the young children displaying their footballing skills.

What was more interesting from the spectators was the performance of the girls who showed confidence in the sport as they freely played and scored goals.  Even though most of the schools are yet to finish their annual SSSA athletics competition, the grassroot sessions will be strategically staged, to keep the children active in the game. The grassroots programme is part of the RSSC Siyakha initiative, which is sponsored to the tune of E180 000 and is shared equally among three categories and the grassroot receives its share of E60 000. A brainchild of the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation, the programme is in its second season having been inaugurated in the start of 2015/16 football season.
