MATSAPHA – He is slowly but surely winning the tag of ‘half marathon king’.

Melusi Sihlongonyane of Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) successfully defended his 21km crown on home soil yesterday morning. It was familiar territory for Melusi as the second edition of the race, dubbed ‘Wafa Wafa’ is organised by the USDF Athletics Club.

To set the tone for the new year, Melusi ran the 21km in just one hour and 11 minutes to add to his ever growing gold medals that also include triumphs from the very same race last year, the Golden Foot Tuff One and FSRA event.

Following him closely were Wandile Nxumalo and Michael Ndaba of Correctional and Swazi Slojos respectively. The duo were not too far off as they clocked one hour and 14 minutes but were separated by a mere two seconds in a photo finish to the finish line. An impressive attendance was witnessed at the Wafa Wafa race and Deputy Army Commander Jeffrey Tshabalala gave a thumbs up to the growing event. He added that the fundamentals of hosting such an event were to encourage wellness and affirmed that USDF would continue to support sports.
