MBABANE – Tuesday evening thunderstorms have left Somhlolo National Stadium’s oval-shaped roofing ripped open.

The situation was so messy that it left the conference and dressing rooms drenched in water as part of the ceiling was also damaged.
Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala led a team of high government officials, Ministry of Works Engineers, PLS and MTN officials during the tour of the damage at the venue, about three days before hosting the MTN League Y’ello Sunday this weekend.
In fact, a preliminary verdict from the engineers was that the whole affected area was declared a no go zone, pending a final meeting slated for this morning which will determine whether the stadium will be available for this weekend games.

The damage just aggravated what happened two weeks ago which left the oval shaped ball-like roofing partly ripped off.
Last week, Prime Minister Sibusiso Dlamini confirmed the earlier damage and that government was still consulting experts on the repairs.
Yesterday, Minister Ngcamphalala said the situation had worsened following Tuesday’s heavy rains that also wrecked havoc on several maize fields around Lobamba and surrounding areas.

“As you have seen, the damage is too much, but there will be a meeting tomorrow that will determine a long term solution to the crisis. However, the engineers have temporarily advised that we should not use the damaged portions of the stadium because they are risky,” he said.
Premier League of Swaziland PLS Chief Operations Officer (COO) Petros Vilakati said while they had witnessed the damage, they were still in talks with the relevant stakeholders on the long- term solution to the problem.

He said they had toured the dressing rooms and they were shocked that in some rooms the water level was above the ankle.
“Our shoes are still wet from the pool of water inside the whole compound housing the dressing rooms, conference area and even the tunnels leading to the pitch,” he said.
