MBABANE – Mbabane Highlanders’ first choice goalkeeper Sidumo Vilakati is shunning the team’s activities as he is reportedly threatened by unknown people.

The faltering giants, who are enduring a nightmarish 2016/17 campaign, are missing their agile shot-stopper at training at Mhlambanyatsi outside Mbabane since the beginning of the week. He is said to be staying away from the team’s activities since Tuesday for safety reasons. Some unruly fans, it was reliably gathered, were accusing the former Sihlangu goalkeeper of underperformance between the sticks, especially after the 1-2 loss to lowly-rated Tambuti in the Ingwenyama Cup quarter-final at King Sobhuza II Stadium last Saturday.

“Some fans confronted him (Vilakati) after the Saturday game as they felt he could have done better during the match.
“He felt threatened and wrote a letter to the management committee as he was worried his safety was not guaranteed. He opted to stop training pending a meeting with the MC to resolve the issue,” said an impeccable source at the team.

The goalkeeper was reluctant to be drawn to comment on the issue at first but eventually agreed that he was not part of the team for personal reasons.

“There are unresolved issues but I won’t discuss them with the media,” he said briefly.
Highlanders’ Management Committee Chairman David Litchfield said he was yet to see the said letter as he was out of the country since Tuesday. He was on his way back to Swaziland when reached for comment late yesterday.

“All I know is that the goalkeeper is supposed to be at training,” he said briefly.
