MAGUGA – Gifted cyclists Sihawu Dlamini and William Kelly are celebrating a rare podium finish in the three-day Inyatsi Swazi Frontier pairs’ stage race.

Despite ranking a disappointing fourth place on day two on Friday, the duo representing International Tool Hire raced to the top in the final stage yesterday at Maguga Lodge outside Pigg’s Peak to stand a chance to rank second overall.  They clocked 03:57:34, 02:58:25 and 03:37, respectively, to endure the entire course in about 11 hours.

Kelly, 50, who is more than 20 years old than his partner felt the challenge was on the second stage as Sihawu had technical problems.
“Sihawu is strong on the climbs, so we used our different strengths to our advantage,” said Kelly.

Commenting on the route, Kelly was pleased but felt the terrain became muddy on day two due to rains, forcing them to make unplanned several stops.
The cumulative results after day three were yet to be released at the time of compiling this report.

For the first time this year, Global Positioning System (GPS) units, instead of cards, were used to navigate the route. The competitors in separate interviews were satisfied with the devices.
Meanwhile, the race started at Hawane Resort over 10km from Mbabane on Thursday. The next stop was Bulembu Country Lodge in Northern Hhohho before they raced to Pigg’s Peak Hotel and Maguga Lodge.
