MBABANE – It could be about adding depth, quality and experience or even about paving the way for the possible exit to the PSL of striker Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa, as Mbabane Swallows are close to signing Manzini Sundowns striker Phinda Dlamini.

The former national team forward was approached a few weeks ago by the red and white outfit after getting the green light from his current club’s Chairman Mark Carmichael. He then started training with Swallows on Monday and Tuesday.
He was uncertain of training due to work commitments in the capital city, but remained hopeful to still join them after 5:30pm. But that is just around the time Swallows finish their training.

“So long as you have spoken to both clubs, I can tell you that yes, Swallows is my next destination and talks are almost done. But it’s a move I’m ready for. No offence to Sundowns and other clubs, but I have an ambition to win a trophy in the Premier League. I need something to show after my career ends and Swallows can give me that with the calibre of players they have,” Dlamini said.

He said Sundowns had raised him for the eight years he had been with them from First Division, but that could not be the only trophy for him – he wants something to show from the top flight. Questioned on what it has been like in his first two days at training with coach Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati, he responded: “He calls me his nephew. I call him my uncle. He’s an experienced coach who can bring the best out of a player and working with him will be easy for me.”

Sundowns Chairman Carmichael said of the news: “Phinda is like a son to me and me, a father to him, so he wants to go somewhere and I can’t stand in his way. Swallows have made contact about the player, and it appears a case of him wanting to join them and them wanting him so he’s as good as gone.”
