MBABANE – The kingdom’s football giants, Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Wanderers, will kick off their season on a high note by featuring in the Mbombela Challenge Cup.

The tournament is slated for the week after the Telecom Charity Cup at Somhlolo National Stadium next week Sunday.  The four-team tournament will also have Mbombela United and a SAB Motsepe League side from Nelspruit yet to be named.
Both teams have only confirmed receiving invitations to the tournament but are yet to respond.

One of the organisers of the tournament, who is also a former Vice Chairman of the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS), Celani Shongwe, confirmed the latest developments.

“We will invite two Swazi teams like we have done in the past and this is an opportunity for them to market themselves and showcase their talent. The planned date is August 13,” he said.
Shongwe said more logistics regarding the tournament, including the sponsorship package, would be released before the end of the week.

“There is a lot being done behind the scenes and once all is ready for public consumption, we will release a statement, but the tournament is definitely on,” Shongwe said.
Mbabane Swallows Acting CEO Sibusiso Manana said they were told to write down their confirmation by the organisors of the competition.
“We have been invited and that is the position now.

“The tournament, we were told, will be held on the weekend of August 13-14,” he said.
Manzini Wanderers General Manager Patrick Gamedze said: “The club wanted clarity before it could confirm its participation.
“We do not want to put ourselves into unnecessary expenses and that is why we requested the organisers to explain in writing what the financial benefits in taking part in the competition are, before we commit ourselves,” he said.
