MBABANE – The last player standing in the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup will pocket a whopping E20 000.

This is the biggest individual prize money in local football. Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC) Corporate Affairs Manager, Nqobile Magagula, announced the revised purse, which increased by E5 000 as compared to the past year.

She was speaking during a breakfast meeting at Ramblas Restaurant in Mbabane on Thursday.
“The best player should be consistent over a series of matches in terms of technical ability, which includes ball control, vision; anticipation and individual brilliance. Tactical ability covering aspects of being team player, offensive ability, and high intelligence will also be considered,” revealed Magagula.

According to the revised breakdown of the tournament, sponsored to a tune of E2.2 million, the outstanding goalkeeper and ‘sharp shooter’ will pocket E10 000 and E11 000, respectively. There are no categories for the best coach and PRO. The best gaffer last year had won E5 000 while the spokesperson became E8 000 richer.
Royal Leopard, who are the reigning champions, expectedly dominated the past year’s individual awards. Mthunzi ‘Xavi’ Mkhonttfo, who joined DR Congo giants, AS Vita, was the player of the tournament while lanky shot-stopper, Mphikeleli Dlamini, and Frank Hurube, were the outstanding goalkeeper and PRO, in that order.

The tournament with a new-look format is scheduled for Somhlolo National Stadium on August 7. The voting exercise was scrapped for this year’s instalment dubbed ‘Yami Nawe.’  Instead, the ‘big three’ in Manzini Wanderers, Mbabane Highlanders and Mbabane Swallows as well as defending champions, Leopard made the cut. The champions will walk away with E900 000. The draw for the tournament is yet to be confirmed.
Also present during the breakfast meeting was SPTC management comprising General Manager, Swazi Telecom, Francis Dlamini, and his counterpart in Corporate Strategy, Amon Dlamini, among others.
