MBABANE – Manzini Sundowns are considering a name change and are expected to file a notice with the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) this morning.

The ‘Kappa Kappa’ side is reverting to its traditional name ‘Denver Sundowns’, according to team Public Relations Officer (PRO) Muzi Matsenjwa. Papers for the name change have already been drafted with outgoing team boss Mark Carmichael’s signature the only missing link.

Actually, according to Matsenjwa, Carmichael is touching base with the registrar of companies on how Manzini Sundowns chronicled along with the team’s former bosses.
The news of the name change are expected to be delivered during the team’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) next Sunday at a venue yet to be announced

The news of a name change were announced at a supporters meeting held at Manzini Club mid last year but Sundowns are making it official now- in time for the PLS AGM slated for August. While reasons of the name change could not be established yesterday, in last year’s official supporters’ gathering, it was felt that the team had lost its identity from its supporters since they changed their name to Manzini Sundowns.

The merging of Denver Dynamos and Manzini Sundowns back in 1987 gave birth to Denver Sundowns. Denver Sundowns went on to be a powerhouse in the local football scene in the early 90s.

A survey also conducted by the club further revealed that the team had also lost its popularity in the continent as they used to be a vibrant brand in the early 90s. They even took part in CAF Cup as Denver Sundowns after winning the league under the guidance of Wonder Moreira, wherein they paraded the likes of Ronnie ‘Valiant’ Dube, Mathews ‘Chaka Chaka’ Mandlazi and Turbie ‘Washisha Gwebu’ Terblanche to mention just a few.
