MATSAPHA – At least 24 athletes from the Golden Foot Athletics Club would be represent the country in the 2016 Comrades Marathon.

The Comrades Marathon is an ultra marathon of approximately 89km which is run annually in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is the world’s largest and oldest ultra marathon race.

The 24 will leave the country tomorrow for the race to be held on Sunday.
Bidding farewell to the club was its President Tokky Hou. Golden Foot Athletics Club is sending the athletes for the fifth year.

Hou said as a club they were proud to have athletes joining in the more than 20 000 that are expected to grace the event.
The squad comprise of nine ladies and 15 men.

“It is an honour to be bidding farewell to these hard working athletes who are going to represent the country.
“It is in such races that you get to promote your club and share ideas with other clubs from other countries on how they keep standards high,” he said.

The direction of the race alternates each year between the ‘up’ run, starting from Durban, and the ‘down’ run, starting from Pietermaritzburg.
Hou said their main aim was not to compete for honors as there were top athletes from the world that were competing for the first prizes.

Last year, Matsapha Golden Foot Club Chairman Elphas Ngcamphalala made the country proud as he brought back home a silver medal. Ngcamphalala who is also the National Football Association (FA) Referees Committee Chairman, is part of the 24 athletes to travel to South Africa for the race.
