MBABANE – Felix Badenhorst spent the night in holding cells after he failed to appear in court on Monday as advised by the police after he was nabbed for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

The Mbabane Swallows and Sihlangu midfielder was arrested by the Mbabane traffic police on Sunday and was warned to appear at the police station on Sunday but he arrived late.

When the soccer player arrived at the police station he was taken to the police cells, where he waited for his appearance in court. Badenhorst appeared in chambers before Magistrate Sifiso Vilakati where he entered a plea of guilty.

In mitigation, he asked for the court’s leniency, stating that he had spent the night in holding cells and he had learnt his lesson.
Magistrate Vilakati then warned the accused that he should be exemplary and well-behaved as he was a role model to a lot of youngsters in the country.
“You are a role model and should not be caught driving while under the influence of alcohol because there are people who look up to you and want to be like you. Because you have spent the night in holding cells that should be punishment enough for you and I will be lenient when passing sentence,” the court stated.

He was arrested near Extension 3 at the Singapore and Solani’s junction by the traffic police with a breath specimen reading of 0.41mg/l, which was above the legal limit od 0.37mg/l.
The court found him guilty and he was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment with a fine option of E1 000.
Badenhorst is a former Manzini Wanderers player and he joined Swallows four seasons ago.
