IT’S ‘BIRDS’ BOYS, NOT BAD BOYS

My dearest readers... form is temporary, class is permanent. This old age saying holds true in the never-shredding climax to the MTN League first round prize chase as five teams are mathematically poised to win the E300 000 first round prize cheque.

While geometrically or trigonometrically speaking, the reality is that the first round prize cheque is for Young Buffaloes, who are enjoying a four-point lead, to lose. In their last three first round games, the Zenzele ‘Ace’ Dlamini-coached side will face whipping boys Malanti Chiefs, title chasers Royal Leopard and Mbabane Swallows.

The army side basically need a win and draw to clinch the first round incentive – and it is not an impossible feat to achieve having lost one game all season. With Malanti Chiefs at their lowest ebb ever, rock bottom on the log, no one can bet against Buffaloes steam-rolling over the poor Malanti Chiefs to have one hand on the first round prize cheque. ‘Amathole Ezinyathi’ will then face armed forces rivals Royal Leopard and end the first round by taking the free scoring Mbabane Swallows in the last game, which they hope to be their coronation day.

But the mutiny in their camp where the club Chairman of the Management Committee Jabulani Dlamini had a tiff with head coach, Zenzele ‘Ace’ Dlamini (see story on the back: oh, you haven’t because you like to start here on the ‘state of the nation’ sports address every Tuesday. It’s fine by me) could distract them. These are the issues they need to sort out if they are to land the Holy Grail of local football like they did in 2010. Second-placed Mbabane Highlanders kept their own hopes of dislodging the army side with a fortuitous 1-0 win over hapless Manzini Wanderers, the modern day football tragedy. I will address this later as we move along.

Like last season, Highlanders are in the race for the first round prize cheque and this time it’s not in their hands though as they need Buffaloes to lose at least one game and play a draw and then they win all three remaining games if their dreams are to come true.
