MBABANE – Top South African cycling team MTN Qhubeka cyclists are upbeat ahead of the MTN Khemani Road Cycle Classic.

The race, featuring the main 100km event, will be staged at Mabovini in Mankayane on Sunday, starting at 7am. Parading Eritrea-born defending champion Okubamariam Tesfom, the visiting cyclists vowed to leave a mark again when they made a stop in the country through the Ngwenya Border Gate around 7pm last night. Okubamariam said the climbs were a little bit challenging but would do little to deter him as he was eager to defend his title and further improve the record time of 02:36:31 hours he set last year.

Team Media Manager Ralien Rabie felt it was an amazing experience to be back in the country, saying they brought a competitive team again, with about half of the cyclists managing podium finishes in the Africa Games in Congo last month.  Meron Tshome was the Individual Time Trial champion in the continental championships.

“One of the cyclists is fresh from the World Cycle Centre in Switzerland,” she said.
Welcoming the delegation comprising of seven cyclists were MTN Brand and Sponsorship Manager Fisiwe Vilane and MTN Khemani’s Sihlangu Nhlabatsi, among others.

Other top cyclists who arrived yesterday from the established club were Clint Hendricks, Metkel Eyob, Gustav Basson, Stefan Jaco  De Bod and Nicholas Dlamini. The latter was discovered last year during a community visit in Cape Town and was transformed into a phenomenal cyclist.
The rest of the professional teams from the neighbouring country are expected between today and tomorrow. The MTN Qhubeka cyclists will be making a stop at St Mary’s Primary School in Lobamba for a community project this morning.
