MANZINI – The duo of Luis Mashaba and Temalangeni Dlamini won silver medals apiece in the ongoing SARPCCO Games at the Mavuso Sports Centre yesterday.

Both were competing in their respective men and women 400m categories. Luis beat his personal best time in the event, clocking 47:38, a second later than eventual winner Ernest Narib of Namibia.
Zimbawe’s Conias Mundzingwa settled for bronze at a time of 47:50.

“I did not expect this kind of competition really and it was tough. The standard of the athletes took me by surprise but personally I’m happy to set myself a new personal best time,” said 21-year old Luis after the victory ceremony.
Temalangeni, on the other hand, said it was an achievement for her to be second and also admitted that the competition was tough.

While Thabani Mdluli’s 50:10-finish during the heats in the previous day failed to qualify him for the finals, Nomile Dlamini had to be withdrawn at the eleventh hour due to sickness.
SARPCCO is an acronym for the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Games and the country is hosting them for the first time in just its ninth edition.

Participating countries include Namibia, Tanzania, Angola, Lesotho, South Africa and Zimbabwe among others.
Meanwhile, the country had three athletes in Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa, Mlandvo Shongwe and Musa Mkhonta qualifying for the 100m men finals while Siphesihle Dlamini made it through in the women category.
