KING LAUNCHES E0.5M MARATHON
MANZINI – Fresh from hosting a first of its kind football tournament, His Majesty King Mswati III launched a marathon which has been sponsored to the tune of half a million.
The King launched the E500 000 marathon during the official opening of Sivuno Building at Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre yesterday. Sivuno is the E100 million Swaziland National Provident Fund (SNPF) building that was launched in Manzini yesterday.
The King said the marathon, which would be an annual event, is sponsored by the Swaziland National Provident Fund.
“As we open this new facility, we are also happy to take this opportunity to announce the launch of an annual marathon. We wish to thank the SNPF for coming up with an initiative to launch a marathon in the country which has been sponsored to the tune of E500 000,” he said.
The King said sport was a good initiative to keep people healthy, both young and old. He said it also goes a long way in keeping the youth away from crime.
He said in some countries, marathons were popular.
“We have seen football dominating sporting events in the country and we look forward to seeing more of such marathons gaining equal popularity in sports,” he said.
He said he was happy that in this marathon, people would not be running for nothing but for good prizes.
His Majesty said people work for many years before they could have E500 000 but with the newly-launched marathon, one has to decrease the body belly and join the marathon to stand a chance of getting such an amount in one day.
