MBABANE – Swazi Slojos athlete Sifiso Sibandze won the Olympic Day Run 21km on a time of 1:08:55 hours yesterday.

The race, attended by over 40 athletes, started at the Prince of Wales sports ground. The 26-year-old took the lead from the start to finish. He never gave a chance to the other athlete to catch up with him. The race passed places including Dalrich East, Mbangweni, Sidwashini, Makholokholo and back to Mbabane, Prince of Wales.

Coming second was his teammate Sifiso Vilakati who finished on a time of 1:09:28 hours while on third place was Umbufo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) athlete Wandile Nxumalo on 1:09:55 hours.
Top athletes in the long distance did not show up in the race. Sibandze said he was happy that he finally won a gold medal after he came 13th in the KwaMagogo Legacy 10km race held a fortnight ago in Manzini.

“My performance was good. I started the race well and dominated from the start to finish. There were challenges along the road as I was competing in it for the first time,” he said. His runner-up Sifiso Vilakati said he had it tough.

“I tried to catch up with him but he gave us no chance. He started at a high pace but I think personally, I did well and happy am with the time that I clocked. I hope to continue working hard and dominating some of the races,” he said.

In the female’s category, Royal Swaziland Police (RSP) athlete Winile Mnisi continued to dominate as she was the winner in the ladies section.
