MANZINI – As the country’s Oyama karate artists look forward to this year’s Jacob Zuma Cup Karate Championships, not even those who know they are the best are guaranteed a place in the squad to the international task.

Oyama Kyokushinkaikan Karate Association of Swaziland (OKKAS) President Shihan Mfanafuthi Vilakati observed last Saturday after the Oyama National Teams tournament at Zakhele Community Hall, that the standard was so high in the sport now.

“The juniors are coming in very strongly and mounting a big challenge to their seniors such that selection of our squad to the Jacob Zuma Cup will be tougher this year,” Vilakati said.

He said what was witnessed in the tournament, like in the first they had a few months back, was intense and healthy competition with the juniors giving the seniors a run for their money.

However, he said this was also a positive for their squad selection.
Vilakati further said the objective of the tournament was to create and promote the spirit of being a team so that even on international assignments it prevails in the squad.
